Moringa, often referred to as the “drumstick tree” or “horseradish tree,” is native to regions of South Asia and Africa. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine due to its nutritional and medicinal properties. Its rich nutrient profile, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, plays a crucial role in enhancing skin health.
Scientific studies have shown that Moringa can have a profound impact on skin health. Here are some of the recently discovered ways that Moringa can work for you and your skin:
Moringa leaves are a powerhouse of nutrients. They are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which are essential for healthy skin. These vitamins help in collagen production, skin cell regeneration, and protection against free radicals. Studies have suggested that consuming Moringa leaves can promote smoother and younger-looking skin.
Moringa contains anti-inflammatory compounds, such as quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Inflammation is a common culprit behind various skin issues, including acne, redness, and premature aging. Applying Moringa seed oil topically can help quickly soothe and calm irritated skin, reducing redness and inflammation.
Moringa has a particularly high concentration of essential amino acids, including proline and hydroxyproline, which are crucial for collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein that maintains skin’s elasticity and firmness. Including Moringa in your diet can aid in collagen production, resulting in smoother and firmer skin.
Adding Moringa leaves to your daily diet, either in dried leaf or in powdered form, can provide a wide array of skin-boosting nutrients. You can mix Moringa powder into smoothies, sprinkle it on salads, or even brew it as a tea for internal nourishment.
Moringa seed oil can be applied directly to the skin. It can be used to make a homemade moisturizer or as an ingredient in DIY face masks. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it an excellent choice for those looking to combat skin issues like acne, dryness, and premature aging.
Moringa supplements, available in various forms, provide a convenient way to ensure a consistent intake of Moringa’s skin-boosting nutrients. Moringa powder is… well – let’s just say it’s less than delicious! Moringa leaves have a taste that is similar to green tea, but for some reason powdered moringa becomes very bitter and metallic tasting. Moringa supplements in capsule form are an excellent option for those who would prefer for it to skip their taste buds. Here is a great tasting Moringa tea that we highly recommend!
The scientific evidence is clear: Moringa can significantly improve skin health. Whether you choose to consume Moringa leaves, seeds, or seed pods – drink it in a tea, or use Moringa seed oil topically, this versatile tree offers a natural and effective solution for healthier, more radiant skin. Its rich nutrient content and anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable addition to your skincare regimen.
If you’re looking to enhance the health and appearance of your skin, consider incorporating Moringa into your daily routine. From reducing inflammation to promoting collagen production, Moringa’s benefits are grounded in science, providing a compelling reason to explore its potential as a skin health booster. Embrace the power of nature and unlock the secrets of Moringa for skin that truly glows.

Let's be honest; caffeine isn't all sunshine and rainbows. While it can provide an immediate burst of energy and alertness, it often leaves us with a crash later in the day. That mid-afternoon slump is a feeling most of us are all too familiar with. Caffeine can disrupt our sleep patterns, leading to insomnia or restless nights. And don't even get me started on those jitters and anxiety that can creep in when you've had one too many cups of joe!
So, what's pushing people to look for caffeine-free alternatives? It's all about well-being and a desire to escape caffeine's less desirable side effects. Most of us generally don’t want to feel jittery, restless, irritable or have increased headaches and anxiety. Let’s not forget the awful stomach issues like heartburn and even ulcers! Many coffee and tea lovers are discovering the wonders of caffeine-free chai tea as the perfect solution.
Caffeine-free chai tea, often referred to simply as "chai," is a delightful blend of herbs, spices, and warmth. You can skip the black tea and swap it out for an herbal tea, like moringa, making it an excellent choice for anyone wanting to avoid caffeine. Here are a few reasons why people are making the switch:
Chai tea is like a warm hug in a cup. The combination of spices, typically including cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves, creates a soothing and calming effect. It's perfect for winding down after a long day.
Some of the spices in chai, like ginger and cinnamon, have been known for their digestive properties. Chai tea can help alleviate stomach discomfort and bloating.
The biggest draw is, of course, the absence of caffeine. You can enjoy caffeine-free chai tea any time of the day without worrying about sleep disturbances or caffeine crashes.
Chai tea comes in various flavors and can be customized to suit your taste preferences. You can enjoy it hot or iced, sweetened or unsweetened, with milk or dairy-free alternatives.
Chai tea is packed with antioxidants, which can help protect your cells from damage. It's a healthier choice compared to sugary or artificially flavored drinks.
Some studies suggest that the spices in chai tea, especially cinnamon, may aid in weight management by stabilizing blood sugar levels and reducing cravings.
So, why not ditch the caffeine and embrace the wonderful world of caffeine-free chai tea? Not only will you be bidding adieu to the negative side effects of caffeine, but you'll also be welcoming a host of health benefits, especially with the addition of Moringa. Whether you're a coffee aficionado or a tea enthusiast, give chai tea a try. It might just become your new favorite drink, offering you a warm and comforting embrace without the caffeine-induced jitters.
]]>Fair Trade, as the name suggests, is a global movement aimed at creating a fair and equitable trading system. It focuses on ensuring that small-scale tea farmers and laborers receive a fair price for their produce and have improved working conditions. On the other hand, Ethical Tea Partnerships is an initiative that emphasizes the importance of ethical labor practices, environmental sustainability, and the overall well-being of tea communities. While both are driven by noble intentions, there are some key differences between them.
One of the main distinctions is their focus. Fair Trade primarily emphasizes fair pricing and income stability for tea producers. The organization sets a minimum price for tea products, ensuring that farmers are paid a rate that covers their production costs and provides a reasonable standard of living. This approach can be beneficial for individual farmers but may not always address broader issues like environmental sustainability or community development.
Ethical Tea Partnerships, on the other hand, takes a more holistic approach. It acknowledges that ethical sourcing goes beyond fair wages. ETP encourages responsible land use, water management, and sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring that tea is grown in harmony with nature. Additionally, ETP places a strong emphasis on social development, investing in education, healthcare, and community well-being. This makes ETP a comprehensive solution that takes into account the long-term welfare of tea communities and the environment.
Another significant difference lies in the certification process. Fair Trade has a well-established certification system that allows consumers to identify products meeting its standards through a recognizable label. ETP, however, works with producers and brands to improve their practices and doesn't offer a separate certification label. Instead, ETP focuses on building long-term partnerships and guiding companies toward sustainability, which means that consumers may not always see a distinct ETP logo on their tea products.
In terms of impact, both Fair Trade and ETP have made meaningful contributions to the tea industry. Fair Trade has been successful in ensuring fair compensation to many small-scale farmers, while ETP's broader approach has led to improvements in sustainability and community development. Ultimately, the choice between the two may depend on the specific values and priorities of the consumer.
The tea industry has made significant strides in adopting ethical and sustainable practices through organizations like Fair Trade and Ethical Tea Partnerships. While Fair Trade places a primary focus on fair pricing, ETP takes a more holistic approach, addressing environmental and social aspects of tea production. Both have their merits and contribute to a more ethical and sustainable tea industry. The informed consumer, equipped with this knowledge, can make choices that align with their values, ultimately supporting a more responsible tea market.

]]>Fasting, the voluntary abstention from food for a certain period, has gained significant attention in recent years as a potential key to a healthier lifestyle. The idea of fasting is not new; it has deep historical and cultural roots, often associated with religious practices. However, modern science has shed light on the potential health benefits of fasting, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking to improve their overall well-being.
Fasting comes in various forms, and each method offers unique advantages, making it essential to choose one that suits individual needs and schedules. The two most prominent proponents of fasting, Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg, have contributed significantly to the understanding of fasting's medical benefits and safety.
Intermittent fasting (IF) is one of the most popular fasting methods, which involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting. Dr. Jason Fung, a renowned nephrologist, suggests that intermittent fasting can aid in weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This method allows flexibility in choosing fasting windows, making it adaptable to different lifestyles.
A 16/8 fasting schedule is a common form of intermittent fasting, where one fasts for 16 hours and consumes meals during an 8-hour window. This method is suitable for many individuals as it aligns with their daily routines. Fasting from dinner to lunch the next day, for example, can be a practical way to start. This method is particularly appealing for women aged 30-60, as it can help regulate blood sugar levels, leading to hormonal balance and weight management.
An extended fast typically lasts more than 24 hours. Dr. Eric Berg, a chiropractor and expert in ketogenic diets and fasting, has advocated for the benefits of extended fasts, which last for multiple days. While long-term fasting might seem daunting, it can be safe and advantageous when done correctly. Dr. Berg emphasizes that during extended fasts, the body enters a state of autophagy, a cellular cleaning process that removes damaged cells and regenerates new ones. This can be particularly beneficial for women in their 30s to 60s, as it supports cellular health and may contribute to a youthful appearance and improved overall vitality.
For those considering long-term fasting, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it's suitable and safe for their individual health conditions. Proper preparation and supervision are essential when embarking on extended fasts.
Fasting offers a multitude of benefits, including weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, enhanced brain function, and even longevity. It can be a valuable tool for - especially for women - as it addresses specific health concerns related to hormonal balance, weight management, and cellular health. Nevertheless, it's essential to underline that fasting should be practiced with a balanced diet and not as a means to extreme calorie restriction or deprivation. Actually, adapting a low-carb or ketogenic diet can help curb those sugar cravings and make fasting easier.
In general, fasting has re-emerged as a promising approach to achieving a healthier lifestyle. Intermittent fasting, as advocated by Dr. Jason Fung, can be seamlessly incorporated into daily routines, benefiting individuals seeking to manage their weight and improve metabolic health. Extended fasting, supported by Dr. Eric Berg, offers deep cellular rejuvenation and holds great promise for women in the 30-60 age range. Nevertheless, one should always approach fasting with caution, seeking guidance from healthcare professionals to ensure it aligns with individual health needs.
The work of Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg underscores the medical evidence supporting fasting as a viable and safe means to promote health. By choosing the right fasting method and incorporating it into a balanced lifestyle, individuals can harness the potential of fasting for life, reaping its numerous benefits while assuaging concerns about long-term fasting. It's definitely worth giving it a try, but like anything else, do your research. A fasting protocol that works for one person, may not be the right fit for you. Whatever you do for yourself, do it with love!

The problem is Covid-19 threw a wrench in many of our plans. It stopped parties, get-togethers, and outings. Is there a way to still celebrate with a traditional sharing of foods while remaining safe and healthy? How can you host a
post-COVID potluck?
A potluck is a communal meal often shared by a group of people in which each person contributes to the meal by bringing his or her own dish that can feed not necessarily all the guests, but most of them. They are often used by church organizations and fundraisers, office parties, and large friend or family gatherings.
There is some debate over the origins of the word ‘potluck,’ but for the most part, it is accepted that the term came into use during the Middle Ages as a word for providing a meal to an unexpected guest. This guest would get food from ‘the luck of the pot.’ Some also say that ‘potluck’ comes from the Native American Chinook word ‘potlatch,’ which is a communal celebration adorned with singing, dancing, feasting, and distributing wealth among the entire community.
Everyone loves a good potluck. That’s because it is one of the easiest parties for a host to throw—he or she doesn’t have to worry about feeding all the people that show up! It is also nice for those who often worry about going to parties where they might not be able to eat anything thanks to their food allergies. A potluck allows them to bring something they know they will like and is safe to eat. Potlucks can even be strategized to make sure not everyone brings the same thing. Some hosts will have a sign-up sheet for people to bring certain courses of the meal. That way you get a little bit of everything—sides, main dishes, salads, drinks, and desserts! For those who are not confident in their cooking skills, offer to bring other necessary items like ice, coolers, or paper products. Are you a budget conscious Bride? Consider hosting a potluck wedding reception. Our friends over at Kiss My Kitchen will co-ordinate all of the deets for your

In The Beginning
In May of 2015, my father and I had been invited to Morocco as one of the semi-finalists for the Innovation Prize for Africa. Many times during the trip I had expressed my profuse appreciation and joy at having the opportunity to use my array of skills to do something that would be immensely beneficial to the world. During one conversation I expressed, “this is what I want to do with my life. I want to help people and I want to make money doing it”.
Later that spring, my Dad asked me to meet him and a friend at a local restaurant for a business meeting. I had initially assumed that the meeting was in regards to my Dad’s project so I had no idea at the time that this meeting would change the course of my entire life.
Since the summer of 2015, Maisha Tea has been hard at work developing and blending our first 4 blends of Moringa Leaf Tea. When we started selling our tea at the Goldstream Farmers Market followed by the James Bay Farmers Market, we were making all of our tea by hand. That’s right, we were buying fresh ingredients, processing, dehydrating, blending and packaging them all at home! Do you have any idea how long it takes to individually fill 16 tea bags, label them, package them, and then label the packages? We sure do! Anyhow, as our business grew, our processes had to grow as well.
And It Was Good
At Maisha Tea, we exclusively use authentic, raw ingredients sourced from the most ethical, sustainable manufacturers, to make every cup exquisite. Our moringa leaf specialty teas are meticulously blended in order to maximize flavour, aroma and nutritional benefit. 100% of the ingredients used in our Maisha Tea blends are certified organic and imported from through an import structure that is equitably beneficial to farmer.
Our objective is to provide high quality, nutritious moringa-based products to consumers. Through our sister company, The Social Forestry Project, we also strive to provide opportunities for African subsistence farmers to access larger markets to sell moringa at a fair price.
We initially developed 4 flagship proprietary blends of moringa leaf herbal teas:
What is Moringa?
The moringa oleifera tree is one of the most versatile on the planet and known in many cultures around the world as the “miracle tree”. Moringa leaves have long been known to indigenous peoples for their nutritional and medicinal benefits, but only recently has this untapped “super-food” been harnessed into dried leaves and leaf powder to be used in nutritional supplements. Although native to India, the tree grows throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America, where it’s commonly called “drumstick tree” (for its long, slender pods) and “horseradish tree” (for the taste of its roots).
Almost every part of the moringa tree is used in traditional cooking and medicine. The seed pods, or “drumsticks,” are simmered in soups and stews, and the mature seeds are roasted like nuts or pressed to make oil. The flowers are tossed in salads, fried for a snack and brewed as tea, while the fresh leaves are cooked like spinach in all manner of dishes, from curries to omelets. Moringa Oleifera can be an important source of many essential nutrients. Most parts of this plant are said to hold some medicinal properties even including the seeds, fruit pods, and flowers although the leaves are thought to be the main medicinal component.
Moringa leaves are exceptionally nutritious. When fresh, they are rich in vitamin C. When carefully dried, gram for gram Moringa leaves contain 24 times the iron of spinach, 16 times the calcium of milk, 9 times the vitamin A of carrots, many times the potassium of bananas, and every essential amino acid your body needs. The leaves are also recognized as having the highest known antioxidant potential of all plant parts. Although, moringa has been praised for its health benefits for thousands of years, scientists have only investigated a fraction of the many reputed health benefits.
Forever Ethical
At Maisha Tea, we pride ourselves in delivering the highest quality moringa leaf herbal teas to consumers without sacrificing trade ethics. We do not simply build trust by consistently delivering superior quality products, but we also build relationships. Our relationships between our suppliers, trading partners and consumers will never be sacrificed in order to increase profits. When our business grows, the Maisha Tea Family grows horizontally, not vertically. This means that Maisha Tea will expand in such a way that focuses on benefiting a larger number of people rather than having the same number of people reap larger and larger benefits. Maisha Tea is a choice that feels good on the inside and out.
